Shine Walk-a-thon

have been following the British Fitness walking plan given to us in our little pack from Cancer Research UK Shine centre. I have also arranged a colour scheme with my group Neon Babes

The reasons behind the name will be clear when you know what we’ve got to wear during the walk:  Neon blue head and sweat bands in keeping with the 80’s theme (I know, I know, you’d think with we would pick a less obvious name, but alas, we didn’t).

I would much prefer I look an idiot if it meant getting a little more cash for the cause.  I began this for a focus for my training and because I am aware of the brilliant work that the charity does for people.

However recently it has become a lot more personal because I have recently found out a member of my family has had another fight with the disease. It makes me even more determined to get myself training and give this 100% focus and time.

I have intermittent training this week, 10 minutes fast and 5 slow for 3 miles a pop.  It’s going good so far, helped by the brilliant weather our blessed shores are currently having – note that when the rain will fall, which we all know it will, I will maybe not be as chirpy.

Until then, onward I go, don’t forget you can sponsor me via our teams’ page: Team Neon Babes.

Additionally, if you’re also getting involved and want to share your story, add it in the comments below or email me direct on writingspace@hotmail.co.uk, I’d love to hear from you.

  2. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was wondering what all is needed to get setup? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very internet smart so I’m not 100% certain. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

  3. All you need to start a blog is an email and some time, they are for the most part free. To use http://www.wordpress.com just login and follow the instructions. I chose WordPress because it’s got a good variety of layouts and options (most are free), it also has great stats that you can monitor. A good starter blog is http://www.blogspot.com, I used this for my Children’s stories because the layouts are simple and easy to use. Most of the blogging systems are the same and you don’t need to be 100% internet confident to use them, if you can use Microsoft Word and type words on a page you can use them. It also helps to be familiar with uploading images the same way as you may to Facebook (as an example.)

Most blogging systems have a draft option so you can edit and re-edit whatever it is you’re putting up without the World Wide Web seeing it. Then you build it up with links, images and stories and become as creative as you want. That’s the fun part and once you’ve settled on a design you can just sit back and type.

As for what you put into the blog, the better ones I’ve read are the simple and honest blogs. I’ve read a lot of things about blogs myself and the most part they say to “write what you know.” The best thing is to open one up and get playing around; you can’t break them or go wrong because it’s your own little space on the web.

I hope this helps you in some way, good luck with the blog and once you’ve published it let me know and i’ll link to it (assuming it’s not dodgy or illegal 😉

ps: I have not paid anythng for this blog but you can pay to use WordPress in your own website. There’s areas on WordPress for this: http://vip.wordpress.com/ and http://en.wordpress.com/products/. I am not too familiar with other blogging systems and what they offer but I am sure more would.

  4. Everyone complains about the Government doing nothing, but in reality it’s us doing nothing. If the Americans of this homeland would make a stand and make a demand for what is right then things would finally change. It’s tiring hearing about what’s incorrect with our land without action. Stand up for what you believe in.

  5. Aw, this was a really nice post. In idea I would like to put in writing like this additionally – taking time and actual effort to make a very good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and by no means seem to get something done.

  9. This is my first time i visit here. I found so many entertaining stuff in your blog, especially its discussion. From the tons of comments on your articles, I guess I am not the only one having all the enjoyment here! Keep up the good work.

  10. The beauty of these blogging engines and CMS platforms is the lack of limitations and ease of manipulation that allows developers to implement rich content and ‘skin’ the site in such a way that with very little effort one would never notice what it is making the site tick all without limiting content and effectiveness.

  15. I would say to write about what you know/love… it doesn’t matter if you have 1 follower or 100,000. If you love what you write and are happy to share it than you’re onto something.

Also, link out to as many places that you can and let them know you have because this may help spread your writing.

I would also say, I started this blog to share my work (poems and short stories) and I am now planning on self-publishing them, I tend to try to base my posts around my experiences (which is why the Shine Marathon posts are up here) but I originally based my blog on writing and story-telling. This is still a theme I try to keep going… my point being I would say you can move away from your blog’s usual writing to other areas so long as they keep the same general theme at heart.

It is also worth looking through WordPress in more details because there’s hints and tips from them which are brilliant. It’s not a race though, enjoy the journey 🙂

Howdy! I know this is kinda off topic however I’d figured I’d ask. Would you be interested in exchanging links or maybe guest writing a blog article or vice-versa? My blog addresses a lot of the same topics as yours and I think we could greatly benefit from each other. If you might be interested feel free to shoot me an email. I look forward to hearing from you! Awesome blog by the way!
